Notes on Chance- Medley as an added item to the Paper Wealth scenario's treasure tables, and as used in the Perchance adventure module. Notes (`with following Footnotes for definitions of odd terms referenced): A Chance- Medley is a species of Decree Arbitral in documentary form. It holds forth a finding covering a particular homicide, or maybe any kind of damages resulting from a specified incident or occasion, which removes the onus of intentional guiltiness from any of the parties involved by reason of the chaotic nature of motives and conditions at the time (`farrago). It effectively reduces any accuser's preferred charges of up to Murder I, down to nothing more than Death By Misadventure. The term "decree" wasn't used in the Paper Wealth tables except generally in the description of a Royal Edict, for the reason that it just broadly means a pronouncement that can embody various contexts: even down to such simply prompting/ reminding dicta as solemnization (over an enactment or dedication such as marriage or baptism), recognizance (as per our courtrooms' lingo: describing an objective presumption of accountability rather than a subjective assumption of responsibilty), inquests ("That she's not only merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead!") & etc. When being employed (typically phrased as "issuing" a decree) in the one limited sense of: "Let me tell you how it will be.. Tax Man!," a decree would typically fall under the same Imposition category as an Edict; but in this specifically Arbitral case it represents a ruling or judgment in the manner of a clearance/ release or indulgence - thus more appositely falls under the License category, and could become susceptible to some of the same shortcuts and abuses marking its implementation in practice. `primordial aspect of the imputation of blood- guiltiness and the mortal insistence that a killer account (both answer and pay) for it - Biblical parallel provision for sanctuary/ cities in regard to the onerous agency of, and address to, the "avenger of blood" (in somewhat oriental fashion) Types of generally applicable Chance- Medley License documents potentially in play: `Arena= in a recognized gladiatorial venue, when presented before entry -> may disregard any imposed local conventions or "house rules", may be expected to turn on any associated fighters without additional warning, and cannot be subjected to a thumb vote regardless of performance `Feud= in case of a declared antipathy or enmity, when presented in one's defense -> justified in shooting first (founded on precautionary warnings and expectations of counteraction); also valid in a longstanding or recognized dispute or quarrel over an object of contention, like a woman or a claim (as in Dune, when the emperor won't arbitrate to resolve the problem, but tries to take advantage of it and contrives to promote both sides) `Quest= release in the conduct/ outcome of a precarious joint venture (The Eiger Sanction), or a formal contest/ tontine, or when presented for posting upon one's active entry (the parents' permission slip/ liability waiver) `Warfare= verdict in the process of a military operation, may excuse one from "friendly fire" mistakes, or the perceived violation of a truce `Pursuivant= as just a cog in the machine of an overarching jobsite/ mission, deeming an unavoidable/ fated/ accidental mischance, exemption - eg from having to follow or accompany one's master in death `Oyez= in the utilization of a specified attainment, serves as an admonition to approach at your own risk someone who "can't help himself" - one's hands have been registered as lethal weapons, so if messed with it's partially on the attacker; noted as a carrier of disease or leprosy, trainer/ keeper of wild animals Footnotes (definitions from `Dictionary): `Chance- Medley (or Fr. Chance- Melee, Scot. Chaud- Medley) `Decree Arbitral `Anglo- Saxon "wer(e)gild", Scotch "bloodwit(e)", Irish "eric" Note that the usage of "wereform" is something of a misnomer, being as werewolf is "man- wolf". `make some reference to Wills section in ITL 'Merry' Men (`?as myriad/ medley/ melange/ mismatched/ multifarious assemblage - jolly (roger) - meri(t))
